The Canadian Peach

I keep hearing that there was a variety of peach tree known as the Canadian Peach. It was developed in Canada to withstand colder temperatures.

I have had some fairly reliable information passed on to me that in the early 1940’s to the early 1950’s there were peach trees in backyards in Deseronto, Picton, Kingston even down around Ottawa.

The Canadian Peach was not a free stone peach, but a clinging stone variety. It also did not yield as much fruit as the more popular less hardy varieties. In the long run caused it to slip below the radar and vanish.

Now that there is renewed interest in heirloom varieties and small scale growing it would be nice to find out if there are some varieties of peach that could take a colder climate I would assume there would be extra precautions needed to insure it got through the winter.

If anyone knows anything about this variety of peach, or has ever heard anything, let us know (or if you are aware of any varieties that exhibit cold hardiness).
