Dandy fun facts about the Dandelion

I must admit before going any further with this article that, I myself have always disliked dandelions. I know they are cute and fuzzy but they severely impact the color scheme of my lawn. I decided that with knowledge comes power, so I set out to learn about Taraxacum officinale or Lawnness infestess weedess the Dandelion.

The Canadian Peach

I keep hearing that there was a variety of peach tree known as the Canadian Peach. It was developed in Canada to withstand colder temperatures.

I have had some fairly reliable information passed on to me that in the early 1940’s to the early 1950’s there were peach trees in backyards in Deseronto, Picton, Kingston even down around Ottawa.

The Canadian Peach was not a free stone peach, but a clinging stone variety. It also did not yield as much fruit as the more popular less hardy varieties. In the long run caused it to slip below the radar and vanish.

Watering lawns? How much water is it we use.

I recently was sent an article from a member of our site talking about the fact that residents could only water their lawns every other week. They also stated that an inch a week would be adequate for the lawn.

To put this in to perspective an inch of rain on an acre of land is approximately 22,610.66 imperial gallons or 102,790.15 liters of water. If you take these numbers and figure that there are approximately 16 weeks of watering lawns it becomes clear how much is used.

The Relaxation That Comes From Gardening

A good friend of BuyFromTheFarm.ca just called the office. He will remain Anonymous in order to protect him from his wife and us from a lawsuit.

He called to ask what could be done to keep the rabbits away from his wife’s plants.

It was with genuine fear he relayed a story of a normally sane, gentle women who had awoken him with a string of blasphemous words that could have been the sound track from the exorcist .

Carrots and Their Origins

Well it is raining. The garden is about 70% planted. So now it is time to discuss an idea I have. I am thinking about starting to do a feature on the origin of different fruits and vegetables. I will start with the lowly carrot

The carrot is believed to have originated in Afghanistan about 5,000 years ago. It was not orange then, but most likely purple. This color was changed by crossing of color variants to obtain the present day dominant color orange. There have been references on other sites to Dutch breeders having created the orange as a patriotic gesture to The House of Orange.
