Hi Everyone,
Everyone gets to decide what they eat. If you want eggs that from chickens that run loose, go right ahead. You should understand that this is a niche market. It is doubtfull that this production method could produce the same supply as current methods. It is certain that eggs would cost considerably more. People generally do not want to pay more for food.
The phrase "pecking order" is a very common expression in the English language. It was derived from observing the instinctive habit of adult chickens to sort out dominance within the flock. This can resut in chickens injuring, killing and eating each other. It gives one pause to consider what could happen if a large number of chickens had access to each other and were engaging in "pecking order" behaviour.
The fact that 95% of eggs are produced in cages would seem to indicate that that is the best way to do it. The chickens are protected from the weather, air and soil borne pathagens, and each other. This also results in fresher eggs. It makes sense does it not?
