BuyFromTheFarm.ca is operated by K-IT.ca Inc. The site resulted from a brainstorming session by the partners about agriculture and the lack of proper integration of rural and urban marketing channels. K-IT.ca has specialized in rural business concerns and rural web services. The effort to make a web site accessible to users with dial-up internet connections has always placed us firmly in this mindset. Mr. Monahan learned to drive on a McCormick Farmall and Mr. Rickards is still active on the family farm.

BuyFromTheFarm.ca is dedicated to providing a hub where consumers seeking local produce and growers who have produce to sell can find each other. To this end, BuyFromTheFarm.ca has been designed to provide rapid access to the required information. It is completely searchable. Lists are classified, and may be refined according to the needs of the user. The better the information, the better the searches may be refined. If all else fails, a site wide keyword search may be done using the Search function at the top of each page.

Mr. Monahan has over 25 years experience in information architecture and database design, and Mr Rickards has a like amount of experience on the farm and in agricultural advocacy. Together we hope to provide an efficient, business-like site, without a lot of unnecessary bells and whistles which will hinder access for rural users on dial-up connections.

At the same time, we recognize that urban users are looking for more than just a list of groceries. The price of fuel affects both the producer and the consumer, so the consumer is looking at making their trip to the farms more efficient. To this end we are listing other services which are available in the rural community, and hope that during the trip, or during the off-season, the users will take advantage of the many other services and events offered outside the urban areas, like fairs, tours, rides etc.

Our site was born on an auspicious date (Fri, June 13,2008) and grew from local roots. We will be developing a list of local growers, producers and retailers who carry local produce. Please check back often. The more who use and support BuyFromTheFarm.ca, the better the service we can provide. To keep the site interesting, we are including a recipe section for users to submit their favourites. We also hope to have a number of contributors submitting material and moderating discussions on a number of topics pertinent to local produce. BuyFromTheFarm.ca is a Canadian Site, and we want to address Canadian issues. Please note that, although the pages you are viewing are in English, the site is set up for both official languages, and is 75% translated. We expect to be able to serve either language equally very shortly when the french version is activated.
