We have added a proposed section for Canadian Food Manufacturers, the people who bring you the packaged food you find in your local grocery store, to help you to choose products based on their Canadian Content and Nutrient value. The section is only in the proposal stage, so please leave us your feedback, and encourage any Food Manufacturers you know (large and small) to participate. To help you find your way, we have created a step-by-step how-to, which will walk you through the registration and submission process.
Coming Soon 2009 has arrived, and with it some new features will be added to the site. Tomorrow's Supper, Processors' listings and Canadian Farm Product labelling will soon be available though this site.
We will be including lobster, and farmed fish as agricultural products. The Canadian Government considers our lobster fisheries to be farms, and they fall under the jurisdiction of Agriculture Canada. Most Provincial jurisdictions also include aquaculture with agriculture. If you own a trout farm (for sale as food, not stock) or fish for lobster off our coast, please join us and create a listing so others can find you through our site.
By popular demand, we will be adding Tomorrow's Supper. As our list of recipes grows, BuyFromTheFarm.ca will be promoting a different recipe each day. The featured meal will include Canadian agricultural products and offer new ideas on how to prepare them.
Processors play a large part in the agricultural chain. We will soon have the capacity of listing processors who use Canadian farm products, and to sort those listings by products and province, in a similar way as the farmers' markets listing.
Tying all this together is a new project initiated by BuyFromTheFarm.ca. The team will be developing and participating in a voluntary Canadian Farm Product labelling campaign. Prepared product such as jams could contain one hundred per cent Ontario strawberries, and various other ingredients from anywhere. Producers would be able to submit their products' contents' list and the origin of those products. A product identification number would then be assigned and the information about its Canadian content would be made available on-line through a small web interface placed on this site.
